Your Job Search Strategy – LinkedIn
Your Job Search Strategy – LinkedIn
I am seeing a lot of information online about personal branding. Experts are creating online tutorials, academies, and online training sessions etc all of which apparently help you to create your own personal branding strategy – critical if you are promoting something new. If you are looking for a new job you can proactively promote yourself via social media platforms to boost your success. LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are great for this and can be used along with traditional job application methods.
Firstly, ensure you have a well written CV – take advice from people who know you and know the industry you want to work in to ensure you include all your experience, achievements and really promote yourself!
Make your cover letter specific to the job you are applying for and promote your unique skills. You can always ask someone who knows you well and is a good writer to help you create a beautiful cover letter, a Conference Producer would be great at this!
LinkedIn can also be used as your Online CV, a window (which everyone is looking at right now) to promote what you have achieved, who you are and what you would like to do. Within your LinkedIn profile you can include your skills, experience, interests and academics but also share information about projects you have worked on, provides context around the companies you have worked for and created the opportunity for positive comments to be shared from people who know you & your work via the recommendations section.
My top tips for utilising LinkedIn for your job search:
- Make your profile engaging, interesting and positive
- Add your CV to your LinkedIn page (if your search is not confidential)
- Set up the job search facility
- Make sure your LinkedIn page is full – include your job role details, the events you worked on, achievements, successes. Really pad out your work history – get some relevant detail in around projects or responsibilities you have enjoyed
- No typos and keep the content positive
- Ask clients, colleagues, contacts who know you well to write recommendations about you and your work
- Groups – join lots of groups, as many as you are allowed. Select groups which are likely to share information about the industry or job role you are interested in. Comment, post, share, like on the companies LinkedIn updates – be active in the group chats.
- Connect with professionals who are relevant to your job search, make yourself known
- Follow the companies you want to work for or who interest you and check out their jobs page and updates for jobs
- If your search is not confidential share your interest in the company with them
You can use LinkedIn as much as you are comfortable with; sharing information, post videos, tracking companies you are keen to join.
Connecting with potential employers online is key element of your job search strategy, its business development for your career!
