My 5 Top Tips for Managing Stress when Work is busy!

My 5 Top Tips for Managing Stress when Work is busy!

Is it just me or does work feel incredibly busy at the moment? At this time of year it’s always very busy at home with my kids, however this year instead of sports day, music shows and ‘moving-up day’ we have GCSEs and A-Level exams for 2 of my 3 children PLUS PROM!

So, with a busy work and home life at this time of the year, I have to remind myself how to manage my stress levels to make sure I keep on top of everything and maintain my well-being and performance.

Here are my top 5 Tips:

  1. Prioritize and organise – Taking a step back and evaluating my tasks. Identifying the most critical ones and prioritizing them accordingly and creating a to-do list to keep track of my progress. This helps me to have a sense of control and reduce feelings of overwhelm.
  2. Practice time management – Set specific time blocks for different tasks and activities, for me I try to get all non-work tasks (booking a Prom dress fitting and driving lessons today!) before I start work or during lunch. I am also trying to stop multitasking so much, as it can have a negative impact on my productivity (and I make mistakes!) and increase my stress levels. Instead, I’m focusing on one task at a time.
  3. Stress reduction techniques – I like to walk and listen to a podcast and I try to block out time in the week to do this I am still loving ‘Diary of a CEO’. Also, as a priority I am booking in my Crossfit classes into my weekly routine, I head to the gym for their later evening classes. I am not the best at practicing mindfulness to calm the mind but I do listen to calming tunes whilst I am researching or having lunch and I find that helps. Essentially, when things are busy you have to find what stress reduction techniques work best for you and make it a priority.
  4. Establishing boundaries is something I find hard, I work from home and it’s really tricky to set clear boundaries between my work and personal life. However, I have been really trying to work on this! Making sure I schedule quality time for my family (and not messaging work or checking LinkedIn!) and downtime for me. If you are office based/working hybrid it’s key to communicate your boundaries to colleagues/ managers and learn to say “no” when possible to avoid overwhelming yourself with extra work.
  5. Ask for help! This week I have asked my network and family for help on a number of occasions recently and I am grateful for their support. I have also delegated a couple of tasks to others to ensure they are completed well rather than me rushing them. It has taken me many years to consider asking for support as a sign of strength, not weakness.

Everyone’s stress levels and management techniques vary, so find what works best for you. Regularly practicing stress management techniques will help you to build resilience and maintain a healthier work-life balance when work or life gets busy!
