Graduates: What’s next?

Finding a job after you graduate can be a daunting and overwhelming experience.

Nowadays, there are so many options in terms of career choices that it’s difficult to know where to begin with your job search. For many of us, our career path is not determined by our degree. For instance, a Medicine degree means that you will be able to become a doctor, but what does a History or English degree lead to?

Non-specific degrees provide you with a wide range of transferable skills that can be applied to a variety of sectors and actually offer many possibilities in commercial jobs.

As a graduate myself, I recommend using your university careers service. You can set up careers meetings, attend careers fairs to meet hiring employers and even be mentored by alumni working in a field that interests you. Using these resources opens up your eyes to the available career choices.

Additionally, internships/placements are a useful tool to give you an insight into the daily processes of companies and what a role entails. They’re excellent for making connections and many interns are offered a permanent role following an internship. Furthermore, a recent survey has shown that two thirds of employers look for relevant experience in a candidate, so interning demonstrates this and gives you the edge against others.

Finally, why not sign up with a recruitment agency such as Jackson Barnes? The recruitment consultants meet with you personally to understand what type of graduate job might be a suitable fit and help you with your search. You could be introduced to jobs that fit your skills but you had perhaps not considered before. It’s a personal and tailored approach to finding your first job.
