How to use the STAR interview technique in interviews
The STAR Interview Technique: Mastering Competency-Based Interviews
When recruiting for media and events jobs, competency or behavioural questions are a staple in interviews. These questions help assess a candidate’s experience and qualities by encouraging story-like responses. The STAR technique is an excellent method for answering these situational questions, providing a structured process that ensures all essential details are included.
In this guide, we explain how to use the STAR technique in your next competency-based interview.
What is the STAR Technique?
The STAR technique is a structured method of answering questions, comprising four steps:
- Situation: Describe the context and when it took place.
- Task: Explain the task and the goal.
- Action: Detail the actions you took to achieve the goal.
- Result: Conclude with the outcome of your actions.
Which Questions Need a STAR Response?
Competency-based interview questions typically begin with a request to describe a time you demonstrated one of the competencies listed in the job description. Therefore, familiarising yourself with the job description is crucial before the interview.
How the STAR Technique Works
The STAR method allows you to craft a narrative that highlights a challenging situation and your resolution. Here’s how each part of the STAR technique breaks down:
Situation
Set the scene by providing context and background. For example, if asked about teamwork, describe the project details, collaborators, timing, and location.
Task
Specify your role or responsibility in the situation. Ensure the interviewer understands your specific contributions, not just the team’s overall effort.
Action
This is the core of your story. Explain how you addressed the difficult situation or solved the problem. Mention whether you acted alone or as part of a team, detailing your response and involvement.
Result
Conclude with the positive outcome of your actions and the lessons learned. Quantify the results where possible, such as a percentage increase in sales, repeat business, or task success.
